THE AD GREENHOUSE OPTION

The AD/greenhouse combination can be a beautiful organic resource, providing fresh, local produce and serving as an educational community centre.

Greenhouses and polytunnels can be beneficial partners to anaerobic digestion by;

  • Integrating with a biofilter that scrubs exhaust gases and odours from the AD operation;
  • Utilising all outputs of the digester including biogas generated heat, CO2, and digestate;
  • Helping to evaporate surplus moisture from the AD operation;
  • Being a year-round source of fresh local produce; and
  • Providing an inspiring educational space showcasing the full closed-loop food-to-energy-to-food cycle that anaerobic digestion is uniquely placed to offer.

Digestate makes nitrogen, phosphorus and other valuable nutrients available in renewable form and studies have shown it to increase germination and overall plant growth rates by up to 30%.

Greenhouse production is much more labour intensive than stand-alone composting or AD plants, creating more jobs - an attractive potential community business.

With the addition of AD, the interior of the greenhouse is odorless, warm, and conducive to plant growth, making it a welcome environment, particularly in winter. CO2 and sulphur released when burning raw biogas for space heating can significantly help plant growth. An AD greenhouse could house a community café and meeting/workshop areas as well as food growing activities.
